Atlantic Trident 2017, 12-28Apr17
April 12th - April 28th, 2017
Aircraft from the United States Air Force, Royal Air Force, and French Air Force participate in the second-ever trilateral exercise known as "Atlantic Trident 2017" at Joint Base Langley-Eustis (KLFI) in Hampton, Virginia, from April 12 through April 28, 2017. Atlantic Trident was hosted by the 1st Fighter Wing and focused on "air operations in a highly contested operational environment through a variety of complex simulated adversary scenarios with the goal of enhancing interoperability through combined coalition air campaigns". U.S. Air Force aircraft participating include the Lockheed F-22 "Raptor", Lockheed F-35A "Lightning II", McDonnell Douglas F-15E "Strike Eagle", Northrop T-38C "Talon", and Boeing E-3B "Sentry"; Royal Air Force Eurofighter "Typhoon" and French Air Force Dassault "Rafale" and Boeing C-135FR "Stratotanker" aircraft round out the international contingent.
“This exercise was designed to encourage the sharing and development of air combat TTPs (tactics, techniques and procedures) with our French and U.K. partners, against a range of potential threats leveraging U.S. Air Force fifth-generation capabilities,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Peter Fesler, 1st Fighter Wing commander. “This is not only an opportunity to share the capabilities of the aircraft, pilots and maintainers between our nations, but to build friendship, trust and confidence that will improve our interoperability as we go forward.” Joint Base Langley-Eustis hosted a similar exercise in December 2015, but Atlantic Trident 2017 is uniquely valuable with the addition of the F-35 "Lightning II" to the training. Approximately 225 U.S. Air Force, 175 Royal Air Force and 150 French Air Force service members participated in the exercise.
